History in Montague County
The county was established on Christmas Eve in 1857, and on August 2, 1858 the county received its present day boundaries carved out of Cooke County. At the time when Montague County was formed only three villages existed and none were geographically near the center of the county. An uninhabited area near the center of the county was identified as the county seat and also given the name Montague. At this time, there were less than 1,000 residents in the area, who were primarily from the upper south including Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas.
Montague County voted against secession in 1861. They feared that if Texas joined the Confederate Army then the federal troops would leave the Red River area. At the time the government soldiers provided the only protection from Indian raids. Throughout the Civil War the county residents confirmed their fears as Indian raids forced farmers to abandon their homes.
As the Civil War came to an end the Indian raids didn’t stop. Finally, during the 1870s organized efforts began to successfully drive Indians from the county and in 1878 the governor pronounced that Montague County was no longer a frontier county. By the 1880s the population of Montague County boomed growing from less than 1,000 residents to over 11,000.
