Hood County, TX

Hood County is part of the Western Cross Timbers and sits 41 miles southwest of Fort Worth off of U.S. Highway 377. Residents and tourists alike enjoy spending time fishing and camping along the Brazos and Puluxy rivers. Lake Granbury plays host to boating and picnics, along with other recreational activities. With the primary resources like limestone, sand, oil and gas, Hood County is considered a prime farmland area.

Early Hood County

Before Hood County was settled by travelers from the east, Comanche, Lipan Apaches and Kiowas roamed the area. The town of Lipan, located in the far northwestern part of Hood County was named for the Lipan Apache Indians.

Approximately 10-15 years prior to the Civil War, white settlers began to set up trading posts and surveying the area. Other settlers included stock raisers and farmers who lived along the Brazos and Paluxy river valleys. Like many of the other counties, the main concerns with the area were the raids that the Comanche frequently went on.

In November 1866 Hood County was formed out of Robertson, Navarro, McLennan, Johnson and Erath counties. The county itself was named after Confederate Lt. General John Bell Hood and the county seat of Granbury was named in honor of Confederate General Hiram Bronson Granbury.

Growth in Hood County

From 1960 to 1980 the population of Hood County increased from 5,443 to 17,714, and from 1970 to 1980 it ranked sixth among counties in the United States in the highest growth rate category. The increase that the county saw came from the completion of Lake Granbury. The lake quickly became a popular recreation area and a resort like community for the retirement community. With the arrival of so many new people into Hood County the education levels also rose. In the 1950s approximately 27 percent of residents over the age of 25 had a high school or college education, by the 1970s it went up to 38 percent, and has continued to grow to over 62 percent.
